Employment Classifications and Categories - Staff

Õý°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥ classifies and categorizes all staff positions as follows:

Classifications:

Each staff position is classified in accordance with applicable laws as either Non-Exempt or Exempt.

  • Non-exempt positions are paid by the hour and are entitled to overtime pay.
  • Exempt positions are paid a salary and are not entitled to overtime pay.

Categories:

Full-time - employees who are regularly scheduled to work a full-time schedule of at least 35 hours per week, for a minimum of 9 months. Generally, they are eligible for Wilkes University's standard benefit package, subject to the terms, conditions, and limitations of each benefit program.

Part-time - employees who are scheduled to work less than the full-time work schedule for a minimum of 9 months. (Part-time employees may be eligible for some benefits sponsored by Õý°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥, subject to the terms, conditions, and limitations of each benefit program.) In order to maintain active employment status, part time employees (including adjunct faculty, part time staff and graduate assistants) must receive compensation at least 13 months from the date of their last pay.

Probationary - newly hired employees are considered to be in a probationary period for the first 90 days of employment. Please see the Probationary Period Policy for more information.

Temporary - employees who are hired as interim replacements, non permanent supplemental positions, or to assist in the completion of a specific project. Employment assignments in this category are generally of a limited duration, and typically do not exceed six (6) months. Employment beyond any initially stated period does not in any way imply a change in employment status. Temporary employees retain that status unless and until notified of a change. All legally mandated benefits (such as Social Security and workers' compensation insurance) are provided to temporary employees. Some other Õý°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥-sponsored benefits may also be available, subject to the terms, conditions, and limitations of each benefit program.

PLEASE NOTE: These classifications do not guarantee employment for any specified period of time. Accordingly, the right to terminate the employment relationship at will at any time is retained by both the employee and Õý°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Ö±²¥.
